Nari Maitree Hosts Round Table Discussion on Amending Tobacco Control Laws

Nari Maitree, a leading non-governmental development organization, organized a pivotal round table discussion aimed at addressing urgent amendments to the tobacco control law. The event, held on Saturday (18 November), at Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, provided a platform for key stakeholders to engage in a thoughtful dialogue on this critical issue.

Distinguished guests, prominent media figures, and government officials convened to participate in this impactful initiative. The esteemed Chief Guest for the occasion was Hossain Ali Khondoker, Coordinator (Additional Secretary) of National Tobacco Control Cell, MoHFW.  Khondoker's attendance underscored the government's commitment to enhancing tobacco control measures in the country.

Shaheen Akter Dolly, Executive Director of Nari Maitree, presided over the session, lending her expertise in advocating for women's rights and public health, thereby bringing valuable insights to the discussions.

The special guests included several distinguished personalities from various media backgrounds, notably Sohrab Hasan, Prothom Alo's joint editor; Shyamal Dutta, Editor of Bhorer Kagoj and General Secretary of the National Press Club; Rashed Rabbi, President of Bangladesh Health Reporters Forum, among others.

The round table discussion aimed to address key concerns regarding the amendment of tobacco control laws. Participants engaged in a comprehensive dialogue, sharing valuable insights and expertise on this pressing public health matter. Nari Maitree extends heartfelt gratitude to these esteemed guests for their invaluable contributions to this vital discussion.

The main presentation was delivered by Nasrin Akter, Project Coordinator at Nari Maitree, highlighting critical issues concerning youth addiction to e-cigarettes. Suggestions were put forward, including halting the manufacturing of e-cigarettes, discontinuing single-stick cigarette sales, and amplifying health-conscious imagery on tobacco product packaging.

Abdus Salam Miah, Programs Manager at Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids Bangladesh (CTFK), emphasized the harmful impacts of tobacco on health, environment, and the economy. Miah stressed the urgent need for swift reinforcement of tobacco control laws to save lives and preserve public health.

The session witnessed impassioned calls from various media representatives and journalists urging for stronger laws against tobacco, advocating for smoke-free environments, and promoting gender-sensitive measures in combating tobacco-related challenges.
