Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday (16 December) paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the occasion of Victory Day.
She paid homage by placing a wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation in front of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in Dhaka.
After placing the wreath, the Prime Minister stood there in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect for the memory of the great leader and the architect of the country's independence.
Later, flanked by senior Awami League leaders, Sheikh Hasina placed another wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation as the party chief.
The nation is celebrating 53rd Victory Day with elaborate programmes paying homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country during the Liberation War.
On this glorious day in 1971, Bangladesh was liberated as an independent country after the Pakistani occupation forces surrendered following a brutal nine-month war.
Along with the government, different socio-political, educational and cultural institutions and organisations have chalked out a series of programmes to celebrate the day.
