Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman on Monday (1 January) said that half of the 2,146 polling centres in the country’s capital is risky.

“In Dhaka city, security measures have been taken identifying half of the polling stations as risky,” he told reporters after attending the National Textbook Festival at Rajarbagh Police Lines School and College.

“There are also polling centres in outlying areas within the city, and trawlers are needed to reach there. Considering all aspects, I believe our security system is strong,” he further said.

According to the DMP chief, Ansar members will work in polling stations alongside police. He also stated that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and other law enforcement agencies will patrol outside the stations.

"I think there will not be much problem for the election to be held peacefully," he said.

The 12th parliamentary elections will be held on January 7, according to the Election Commission's schedule.
