Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, the eldest daughter of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has taken the oath as the Prime Minister for the fifth time - paving the way for her to serve the nation for a record 25 years, and setting a unique precedent in the process in Bangladesh’s political history.
On Thursday evening, other members of the new cabinet were also sworn in under her leadership at Bangabhaban. President Md Sahabuddin administered the oath to the new cabinet members, including the Prime Minister, in a bid to begin their new journey.
Through this, Sheikh Hasina took the oath as the Prime Minister for the fourth time in a row, decorating the post of Prime Minister the maximum number of times in the country's history. Before that, she was the prime minister from 1996 to 2001. In her long political career, she has already served four terms as the head of the government for 20 years.
Sheikh Hasina took the oath as the Prime Minister of the new government at 7:03 pm on Thursday. President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to her at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban. The Prime Minister took this oath in accordance with clause (3) of Article 56 of the Bangladesh Constitution.
Following the Prime Minister’s swearing-in, the 25 Ministers and 11 State Ministers took the oath. The ceremony was conducted by Cabinet Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain. Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, and other dignitaries were present at the event.
After taking the oath, the responsibilities of the new cabinet members, led by Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, have been distributed. Some outgoing ministers placed in the new cabinet have been kept in charge of the previous ministry. Again, some previous ministers have been retained in the new cabinet, but the ministry has been changed. Newly appointed ministers and state ministers have been given responsibilities in various ministries and departments.
According to the sources of the Cabinet Division, among the full ministers, AKM Mozammel Haque has been appointed as the minister for the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, Obaidul Quader as the minister for the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali as the minister for the Ministry of Finance, Anisul Huq as the minister for the Ministry of Law, Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun as the minister for the Ministry of Industries, and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal as the minister for the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Besides, the responsibility has been given to Md Tazul Islam in the Ministry of Local Government, Muhammad Faruk Khan in the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Dr Hasan Mahmud in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dipu Moni in the Ministry of Social Welfare, Sadhan Chandra Majumder in the Ministry of Food, Abdus Salam in the Ministry of Planning, Md. Faridul Haque Khan in the Ministry of Religion, and R A M Obaidul Moktadir Chowdhury in the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.
Along with this, the Ministry of Land has been assigned to Narayan Chandra Chanda, the Ministry of Textiles and Jute to Jahangir Kabir Nanak, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to Md. Abdur Rahman, the Ministry of Agriculture to Md. Abdus Shahid, the Ministry of Science and Technology to Yeafesh Osman (Technocrat), and the Ministry of Health and Family Planning to Samanta Lal Sen (Technocrat).
In addition, Md. Zillul Hakim has been assigned the Ministry of Railways, Farhad Hossain the Ministry of Public Administration, Nazmul Hasan the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Saber Hossain Chowdhury the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury the Ministry of Education.
On the other hand, among the 11 state ministers, Nasrul Hamid has been made the state minister for the Ministry of Power, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury for the Ministry of Shipping, Junaid Ahmed Palak for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, Zaheed Farooque for the Ministry of Water Resources, Simin Hossain Rimi for the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, and Kujendra Lal Tripura for the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs.
Besides, Mohibbur Rahman has been given the responsibility of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Mohammad Ali Arafat the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury the Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment, Rumana Ali the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, and Ahsanul Islam Titu the State Minister of the Ministry of Commerce.
Earlier, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed 25 ministers and 11 ministers of state. On Thursday, January 11, the Cabinet Division issued a notification in this regard.
According to the notification containing the list of 36 people, according to clause (2) of Article 56 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, the President has appointed them as Ministers and State Ministers of the Government of Bangladesh on January 11.
