The Awami League-backed candidate Nilufar Anjum Poppy has won in the election from the Mymensingh-3 parliamentary constituency.

After the vote counting at a center in the constituency that had been suspended earlier on 7 January, Poppy was proclaimed the winner on Saturday (13 January).

In the election, Poppy received 54,491 votes, while Somnath Saha, the closest independent contender, received 52,566 votes.

On January 7, voting was reportedly halted after some individuals broke into the polling place at Bhalukapur High School and took ballot boxes.

Around 4 p.m. on that day, when the polls were about to close, they also vandalized the polling place.

The independent candidate received 52,211 votes on the day, while the Awami League candidate received 53,196.

Some 3,032 voters were registered with the Bhalukapur High School centre, which means the results from the centre will decide the fate of the election.

Nilufar, is the wife of late Mahbubul Hoque Shakil, a former special assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
