Bangladesh should be ready to implement the ’Due Diligence Act’: Charles Whiteley

Charles Whiteley, Ambassador and Head of Delegation, European Union to Bangladesh on Tuesday said Bangladesh should be prepared for implementing “Due Diligence Laws” prepared by the EU.

He made the remarks at a seminar titled “Due Diligence Laws” organised by the International Business Forum of Bangladesh (IBFB) in the capital.

As the Chief Guest there, Whiteley also said that Bangladesh is going to graduate from least developed countries (LDCs) to middle-income countries by 2026, for which Bangladesh from now onward should have preparations for compliance with the improvement of the environment, including the hematuria situation.

IBFB president Humayun Rashid presided over the function while Bernd Spanier, Deputy Chief, EU to Bangladesh, read the key note paper.

Speaking there, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Faruque Hassan said there will be cost-effectiveness in implementing the “Due Diligence Laws,” which the buyers should consider during the negotiation of price.

Humayun Rashid said that IBFB has been a facilitator in communicating the new law under process by the European Union to Bangladesh stakeholders like BGMEA, BTMA, and BKMEA.

Mohammad Hatem, Executive President, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Mohammad Ali Khokon, President, Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), and M.S. Siddiqui, Vice President, IBFB, have participated as designated discussants.

Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury, Founding President, IBFB, made concluding remarks, and Dr. Muhammad Abdul Mazid, Adviser, IBFB, said the vote of thanks.
