Twelve US Senators have written to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, requesting her to cease what they call the ongoing harassment of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.
They demanded an end to the practice of "abusing the justice system" in order to specifically target government critics.
According to the Senators' letter from yesterday, Professor Yunus has been the target of more than 150 baseless accusations from Bangladesh for more than ten years.
Along with US Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ed Markey (D-MA), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Peter Welch (D-VT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Ron Wyden (D-OR), and Cory Booker (D-NJ), the letter was signed by US Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and US Senator Todd Young (R-IN).
The Senators stated in their letter that Yunus's legal proceedings have shown irregularities, including his most recent six-month prison sentence for allegedly breaking labor laws in the country, which have been noted by human rights organizations like Amnesty International and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
These reputable organisations argue that the speed and repeated use of criminal proceedings are indicative of politically motivated judicial abuses, they said.
