Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the Independent candidates of the Twelfth Parliament to diligently familiarize themselves with parliamentary procedures and practices.
The instruction was delivered during an initial statement made at a meeting with independent Members of Parliament held at Ganobhaban on Sunday (28 January) evening.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Hasina stressed the importance of acquiring a comprehensive understanding of Bangladesh's history and its constitution. Emphasizing the significance of parliamentary adherence to the country's constitution, she asserted, "The Parliament must operate in accordance with the Constitution of Bangladesh."
With the first session of the new parliament scheduled for the upcoming Tuesday, Prime Minister Hasina, also serving as the President of the Awami League for the fourth consecutive term, convened a crucial meeting with independent members of the parliament on Sunday. The meeting was presided over by Chief Whip of the National Parliament, Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury.
Among the invitees to this pivotal meeting, a notable majority of 59 out of the 62 independent members of the parliament are affiliated with the Awami League.
The recent election held on January 7 saw the Awami League maintaining a firm stance, refraining from any compromise against its party candidates. This strategic decision aimed at avoiding internal divisions and opposition within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jatiya Oikya Front. Consequently, several levels of Awami League leaders are independently contesting in opposition to the party's candidates in 46 seats.
At the onset of the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina highlighted the imperative of adhering to sound parliamentary practices, drawing a parallel with the Westminster-style parliament. She underscored the need for a comprehensive knowledge of parliamentary procedures for effective governance.
In the recent election, the Awami League secured a significant victory, winning 223 seats. Their allies, the Bangladesh Workers Party and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, each secured one seat, while the Bangladesh Kalyan Party won one seat with the support of the Awami League. The election results underscore the continued mandate for the Awami League and its affiliated parties in shaping the future of Bangladesh.
