State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat on Thursday (8 February) said the government will adopt tech-based measures to check propaganda against the country.

“Information technology is the main median to encounter the propaganda carried out using information technology,” he said.

The state minister was replying to a starred question raised by treasury bench member Chayan Islam (Sirajganj-6) in the House with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Arafat said his ministry has no direct authority to take appropriate action against those spreading misleading information on social media from abroad. However, his ministry is working on the issue, he said.

The state minister said the country’s existing laws permit the government to take action against anyone within the country involved in spreading misinformation or committing criminal activities.

Arafat said, steps has been taken to stamp out any rumour or disinformation by the concerned ministries through issuing press note along with real information immediately after being confirmed about the rumour.

State-run media particularly Dhaka and Chattogram stations of Bangladesh Television are regularly airing television commercials (tvc), fillers and other informative messages to prevent spreading rumours and propaganda, he said.
