Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has called for sustainable initiatives to face the adverse impact of climate change in the region, particularly in its vast Barind tract.

"Climate change is one of the global risks in the current 21st century and Bangladesh has become most vulnerable due to its effect," he said, while addressing an inception workshop in Naogaon as the chief guest on Saturday (6 June).

On behalf of their project titled "Extended Community Climate Change-Drought", Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and National Development Programme (NDP) jointly organised the workshop at the office conference hall of Deputy Commissioner (DC).

PKSF Managing Director Dr Namita Halder addressed the meeting as special guest with DC Golam Maola in the chair.

Representatives of different public offices, international development associate organisations and PKSF associate organisations and university teachers joined the workshop.

Besides, executive directors and project officers from 18 project- implementing organisations working to mitigate the adverse impact of climate
change were also present.

Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder said the Barind area, particularly Naogaon district, has become one of the hotspots of climate change. Prevalence of drought has gradually been triggering in the region due to the adverse impact of climate change.

The odd situation has been posing a serious threat to availability of both drinking and irrigation water mounting the irrigation cost.

He, however, said the present government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has adopted diversified steps, including tree plantation, re-excavation of river, canal and pond and increasing use of surface water, to mitigate the drought condition in the Barind area.

The minister stressed the need for successful implementation of the projects so that the target group of people can derive total benefits of those.
