The Students of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia blocked the Kushtia-Khulna highway on Sunday (7 July) as part of a nationwide ‘Bangla Blockade’ program demanding reforms in the quota system.

They blocked the road around 11:30am, causing a 10-kilometer tailback on both sides of the highway.

Earlier, at around 11 am, the students gathered in front of the university’s Mrityunjayee Mujib Mural. They then marched around the campus and blocked the Kushtia-Khulna highway in front of the University’s main gate.

During the blockade, the students placed tree logs on the road and set them on fire to stop traffic. They also played football, sang songs, recited poems and performed various cultural activities on the highway.

The students said, ‘We have come out on the streets to implement the Bangla Blockade program that was announced nationwide to demand reforms in the quota system.’’ They vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met.
