Five judges of the Supreme Court's Appellate Division have resigned.
On Saturday evening (August 10), they submitted their resignation letters to the President through the Ministry of Law.
The judges who have resigned are Justice M. Enayetur Rahim, Justice Abu Zafar Siddiqui, Justice Jahangir Hossain, Justice Md. Shahinur Islam, and Justice Kashefa Hossain.
Earlier today, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan also resigned. In his resignation letter, he mentioned that he stepped down to protect the Supreme Court building and records, and to safeguard the judges from physical harassment.
He further stated, “I have decided to resign to protect the court premises, the homes of the judges, the Judges' Tower, and the district courts.”
It is worth noting that on Saturday morning, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Hasnat Abdullah, issued an ultimatum for the resignation of the Chief Justice and others, threatening to encircle the Supreme Court. A large number of students then gathered at the Supreme Court premises, chanting slogans demanding the Chief Justice's resignation. Following this, the Chief Justice and other judges started resigning one by one.
