Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has frozen the bank accounts of former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and his family.
The accounts of his wife, Lutful Tahmina Khan, daughter Shafia Tasnim Khan, and son Safi Mudassir Khan have also been frozen. Additionally, if they have any business accounts, those too are to be frozen. The action was taken following reports of unusual transactions.
On Tuesday (13 August) the bank accounts of State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and his wife, Arifa Jesmin Konika, were also frozen. On August 12, the bank accounts of former Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, his wife, and United Commercial Bank Chairman Rukhmila Zaman Chowdhury, as well as those of their children or businesses, were ordered to be frozen.
On the same day, the accounts of Information State Minister Mohammad Ali Arafat and his wife, Sharmin Mushtari, were also frozen. Earlier, on August 11, the BFIU froze the accounts of former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud and his family.
The letter states that if there are any bank accounts belonging to former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, his family members, or their owned businesses, those should also be suspended. As a result of the account freeze, they will no longer be able to withdraw money from these bank accounts, though deposits can still be made. This directive was issued under the Anti-Money Laundering Act. Furthermore, relevant account information or documents, such as account opening forms, KYC, and transaction details, must be submitted within five working days.
