In light of the ongoing situation, where mayors of various city corporations have been continuously absent from their duties, and panel mayors have also failed to ensure their presence, the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of the concerned city corporations have been granted full authority.
An official order to this effect was issued by the Local Government Division on Wednesday, August 14.
The order, signed by the Secretary of the Local Government Division, Abu Hena Morshed Zaman, stated that due to the recent developments, many mayors of various city corporations have been continuously absent from their workplaces, and attempts to contact them have been unsuccessful. It has also been reported by the concerned city corporations that the panel mayors are also consistently absent, and their presence could not be ensured despite efforts to reach them.
As a result, many activities of the city corporations have come to a standstill, disrupting public services. In response to this, the Chief Executive Officers of the affected city corporations have been temporarily granted full financial and administrative authority to continue all types of public services and administrative activities until further notice. This order, issued in the public interest, will be effective from August 14.
It is known that after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on August 5, most of the mayors of the country’s city corporations have gone into hiding.
Similarly, many panel mayors and councilors of various city corporations are also reported to be in hiding.
