UN to initiate investigation into killings during student protests soon

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has spoken with the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, over the phone. In the conversation, the UN Human Rights Chief informed that the United Nations will soon begin an investigation into the killings of protesters during the recent student movement in Bangladesh.

He also mentioned that a team of experts will visit Bangladesh shortly to commence the investigation.

During the phone call on Wednesday, the Chief Adviser expressed his gratitude to the UN Human Rights Chief and UN Secretary-General António Guterres for their support of the student revolution in Bangladesh and their condemnation of the unprecedented brutal killings of protesting students during this time.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus assured the UN Human Rights Chief that his administration's foundation would be based on human rights, with the safety of every citizen being the government's top priority.

Professor Muhammad Yunus also sought the UN's overall cooperation in upholding human rights in Bangladesh and in the country's reconstruction efforts.
