A case has been filed in the International Crimes Tribunal against 28 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, President of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) Hasanul Haq Inu, and President of the Workers Party of Bangladesh Rashed Khan Menon, over the killing of student Alvi in Mirpur, Dhaka. The Awami League and its affiliated organizations have also been named as defendants.
The charges were brought on Monday (August 19) at the Investigation Agency Office of the International Crimes Tribunal in Dhanmondi.
Advocate Asad Uddin filed the complaint on behalf of Alvi’s family. The complaint states that between July 15 and August 5, crimes against humanity, including genocide, were committed across Bangladesh under sections 3(2) and 4(1)(2) of the International Crimes Tribunal Act, 1973, resulting in deaths and injuries.
The complaint alleges that on the instructions and plans of the first to 27th accused, other individuals used local and foreign firearms to indiscriminately shoot unarmed protesters of the anti-discrimination movement, committing genocide and crimes against humanity with the intention of total or partial extermination.
The case also names 500 unidentified persons along with the 28 accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, JSD President Hasanul Haq Inu, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, and Jatiya Party-JP Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju. The Awami League and its affiliated organizations have been named as defendants in the case.
