Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives has issued a notification removing 988 vice chairmen and female vice chairmen from 495 upazilas across the country.
The notification was issued late on Monday, August 19.
Previously, the Local Government Division had removed a total of 876 public representatives nationwide. This included the mayors of 12 city corporations, chairmen of 60 district councils, 495 upazila chairmen, and various municipal mayors.
Additionally, due to the death of the chairman of the Natore District Council, the position has been declared vacant. Administrators have been appointed in 61 empty district councils. Furthermore, 495 upazila executive officers have been appointed as administrators of the upazila councils through a separate notification. Seven municipal administrators have also been relieved of their duties.
A source from the Local Government revealed that the country has over 4,500 union councils, with most of the chairmen and members being leaders and activists of the Awami League. Given the current situation, their positions might also be revoked.
