Police have arrested former Chief News Editor of Ekattor Television, Shakil Ahmed, and Chief Correspondent and Presenter Farzana Rupa, in connection with a murder case. The arrests were made in a case filed at the Uttara East Police Station in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed the information on Wednesday (August 21) afternoon.
Earlier in the morning, Shakil Ahmed, his wife Farzana Rupa, and their daughter were detained by immigration authorities. They were later handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of the police. The family was at the airport intending to board Turkish Airlines flight TK-713 to Paris via Istanbul. However, the immigration police did not allow them to leave the country as they did not receive clearance from the City Special Branch (SB).
On August 8, a notice signed by Mustafa Azad, on behalf of the Managing Director of Ekattor Television, announced that, as per the decision and instructions of the management of Ekattor Media Limited, Shakil Ahmed, Head of News, and Farzana Rupa, Principal Correspondent and Presenter, were relieved of their duties effective from August 8, 2024.
