Hasanul Haq Inu, President of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), has been arrested from Uttara, Dhaka. The law enforcement agencies confirmed this on Sunday, August 25.
Hasanul Haq Inu, a former Information Minister, is a key leader of the central 14-party alliance led by the Awami League. Previously, on August 22, another significant figure of the alliance, Rashed Khan Menon, President of the Workers Party of Bangladesh, was also arrested.
Following intense public protests by students, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position as Prime Minister on August 5 and left the country, ending her 15-and-a-half-year rule. She is currently residing in India.
In the wake of the government's fall, several murder charges have been filed against Sheikh Hasina and other former ministers and leaders of the Awami League. Both Rashed Khan Menon of the 14-party alliance and Hasanul Haq Inu, President of JSD, have been implicated in murder cases. Allegations of genocide against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet members have also been lodged with the International Crimes Tribunal.
Several ministers and state ministers of the ousted government have already been arrested in these cases. These include Dipu Moni, Joint General Secretary of the Awami League and former Minister of Social Welfare, former Law Minister Anisul Huq, former Adviser to the Prime Minister Salman F. Rahman, former Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, former Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haq Tuku, former State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and former Deputy Minister Arif Khan, among others.
