Former State Minister of Information Mohammad A. Arafat has been detained. He was arrested today, Tuesday, from the Gulshan area. Arafat won the Dhaka-17 constituency in the 12th National Parliamentary Elections as a candidate from the Awami League. Subsequently, he took the oath as a state minister in Sheikh Hasina’s new cabinet.

Arafat has long been known as a think tank for the Awami League. In December 2022, he became a member of the Awami League’s Central Executive Committee.

Mohammad Ali Arafat is an academic. He served as a professor in the Department of Strategic Management and Policy at the Canadian University of Bangladesh and was the chairman of the Suchinta Foundation.

He has written extensively on various national and international media on topics such as Bangladesh's economic development and challenges, transit and connectivity, suitable policies for the power sector, the trial of war crimes, political development in Bangladesh, and democracy.
