The role of the Red Crescent Society, a volunteer organization, during the ongoing floods has been described as disappointing by MA Akmal Hossain Azad, Senior Secretary of the Health Services Division. He has also announced that the organization's board has been dissolved.
On Tuesday, August 27, at a press conference addressing the recent flood situation, medical services, and the treatment of students injured in anti-discrimination protests, the Senior Secretary made these remarks.
He said, "The Red Crescent's role in Feni, Comilla, and Noakhali has been very disappointing. Therefore, the Red Crescent board has been dissolved to ensure they become more active."
Akmal Hossain Azad further stated, "I won't say that Red Crescent volunteers didn't go to the field this time. They will go to the field, even at the SP's request. However, since the overall role of the Red Crescent was not satisfactory, we have dissolved the board today."
He added, "A new Chairman and a new Secretary General will take over. They will reactivate the organization, and new people will come in. You will see that the Red Crescent will participate as our partner in any crisis."
The government will bear the medical expenses of the flood victims. Additionally, the Health Ministry will regularly inform which institution is receiving how much funding, and a dedicated desk has been set up for this purpose, the Secretary noted.
