Nationwide doctors’ ’Complete Shutdown’ suspended

Doctors have suspended their planned complete shutdown. They made this decision after receiving assurances that those responsible for the recent assault would be arrested within 24 hours.

Dr. Abdul Ahad, a neurosurgeon at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), made the announcement following a meeting with Nurjahan Begum, the Health and Family Welfare Advisor, at the Secretariat on Sunday (September 1).

He stated that while the work stoppage has been suspended, only emergency services will remain operational. Outpatient and routine services will remain closed for the next seven days. If the perpetrators are not arrested and the safety of doctors at their workplaces is not ensured within this period, further actions will be taken.

In response to the assault incident, two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital to ensure the safety of doctors.

Yesterday, chaos erupted at DMCH following the death of a student, who was allegedly neglected in treatment after a road accident. During the commotion, a doctor was reportedly assaulted.

In protest of the incident and demanding the arrest of those responsible, doctors from all government and private hospitals across the country had earlier announced an indefinite work stoppage.
