Nari Maitree organized a successful rally at Ukhiya Camp-15 in observance of World Lung Cancer Day at Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar on 25 September 2024. The event was supported by the Core Group and RRRC.

The rally was followed by a comprehensive discussion session on the significance of World Lung Day, along with a stakeholders' meeting under the Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health (MNCH) and Nutrition Service Delivery Project for Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) in Cox’s Bazar District. The session was chaired by Ms. Shaheen Akter Dolly, Executive Director of Nari Maitree. Ajgar Ali, Deputy Secretary of Camp-15 and Camp-16, served as the Chief Guest at the event.

The discussion meeting was also attended by Hasan Tarek, Information Assistant of the RRRC, Ushen Mong, Site Management Assistant of Camp-15, CIC of Camp-15 and representatives from CARE Bangladesh, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), camp volunteers and various other stakeholders involved in the camp.

In her speech, Ms. Shaheen Akter Dolly emphasized the significance of ongoing communication and collaboration among all stakeholders. She stated, "This meeting provides us with an opportunity to share ideas and enhance our collective efforts toward achieving our common objectives. It is vital that we unite our strengths for the betterment of the Ukhiya camp."

Ajgar Ali, CIC of Camp-15, expressed his appreciation for Nari Maitree’s efforts at the camp, stating, “Nari Maitree is performing exceptionally well in the camp. Their active involvement and dedication, especially in protection, health, and nutrition initiatives, have truly made a positive impact. I have closely observed all the activities organized by Nari Maitree and always strive to attend their programs. In the future, I will do my highest to participate in all of Nari Maitree’s initiatives.”

Nasrin Akter, Advocacy Coordinator at Nari Maitree, emphasized the serious health risks associated with tobacco use, particularly for women and children. She stated. "On World Lung Cancer Day, it’s essential that we promote a 'No to Tobacco' message. Tobacco affects everyone, but women and children are especially at risk from passive smoking, which can lead to serious complications during pregnancy and harm infant health. Smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer and contributes to various other diseases, including heart disease and respiratory problems. Therefore, we must urgently advocate for the quick passage of the proposed amendments to the tobacco control law to protect our communities. I also encourage everyone to work together to make the camp tobacco-free"

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Khaled Bin Yousuf, Program Director of Nari Maitree. He expressed his gratitude to all the stakeholders for their ongoing support and commitment to improving maternal, neonatal, and child health services in the FDMN communities. "Together, we can continue to enhance the quality of our work for the betterment of the camp" he said in his closing remarks.
