The mountains are the most sensitive part of Bangladesh. It frequently cries to have a safe, peaceful life, but the government repeatedly fails to establish peace in the hills, even deploying an army after 54 years of independence. The new month has started with a dead body of a college teacher who died after cruelly beaten by the mob in Khagrachori.

Yesterday on 1 October when a dependable interim government in power who is committed to establish the country also could not stop death of the mass people of hills rather after taking the power, the hills get unrest over law-and-order issues.

Consequently, a college teacher was beaten to death in Khagrachari. In this incident, the situation has become heated due to the conflict between the two sides.

The administration has issued section 144 for an indefinite period in the district to control the situation.

The incident took place at Khagrachari Technical School and College on Tuesday (October 1) around noon.  District Commissioner of Khagrachari. Sahiduzzaman confirmed the issue of section 144.

The name of the deceased teacher is Abul Hasnat Muhammad Sohail Rana. He was the chief instructor of the building construction and safety department of the district technical school and college.

It has been learned that a case was filed against teacher Sohel Rana for sexual harassment of a student. When he returned to work after being acquitted of the case, Pahari students were demanding his suspension.

At 11 o'clock in the morning, the owner of the same organization was blocked by the hilly people. At one stage he died after being beaten up.

In a video circulating on social media, 15-20 hill youths are seen beating up the teacher. Later, the police rescued him and took him to Khagrachari Modern District Headquarters Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Meanwhile, when the news of the teacher being beaten to death spread, there was a chase between the Pahari and Bengalis in Khagrachari Sadar. Miscreants also set the motorcycle on fire and vandalized the building. Various rooms and furniture of technical school and college were vandalized.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Khagrachari District Sadar Hospital Dr. Ripple Bappi Chakma said that the teacher died before being brought to the hospital.

In this regard, Khagrachari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Baten Mridha said, additional police have been deployed in the city to control the situation.

Earlier on September 18 in the morning in Khagrachari, a young man named Mamun (30) was beaten to death. The incident started when the protest procession came out. After that violence spread to Khagrachari and Rangamati. In this incident, three people were killed in Khagrachari.

The situation has not normalized after the clash and violence between Pahari and Bengalis centered on the death of a Bengali youth who was beaten up on suspicion of being a thief in Khagrachari.

The Deputy Commissioner of Khagrachari raised the topic of these rumors. Sahiduzzaman said, “Rumors have become deadly terrorism. Attempts have been made to spread the incident on various social media including Facebook.”

However, the historic Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord was signed December 2, 1997 that failed to establish peach in hills even after 27 yeas.
Experts think, a deal cannot establish peace in hills. People urge for security and basic rights from the government but the government and the hill’s political parties failed to ensure those.

Activists say that the three hill districts become a target at any critical moment of the country due to non-implementation of the peace agreement. Implementation of the Mountain Accord should be the main goal of the government to solve the crisis.
