Nari Maitree Advocates for Stronger TB Control Efforts in Bangladesh

The success rate of treatment in the country is 97 percent. Despite the availability of advanced and free treatment, a large number of patients remain undiagnosed due to a lack of public awareness and social prejudice. 

This number is currently 1 lakh 29 thousand 919. Every year at least 221 per lakh people are infected with tuberculosis in Bangladesh out of which 3300 are drug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis.

A workshop on "Establishment of effective partnership and good governance among partners for quality control" was held on Monday, October 21, at Pan Pacific Sonargaon (Surma Hall) Dhaka, where this information was shared. Br.Gen. Imrul Quais, Chief Health Officer North City Corporation, Dhaka, Dr. Afzalur Rahman, Deputy Director, Health,  Ahmed Parvez Zbin, Divisional Expert, Global Fund, Shayla Islam, Assistant Director, BRAC and others give valuable speech on TB.

A total of 40 representatives were present including officers of BRAC, ICDDRB, PhD, KMSS, NATAB, BGMEA, and affiliated organisations involved in quality control programs—program presented by Nari Maitree, Director of Health and Nutrition, Masuda Begum. Tauhida Sultana, Project Coordinator of the CFCS Round 12 project through a presentation presents that TB is it is one of the diseases among 10 leading causes of death in the world. It is a major public health problem for Bangladesh. According to the World Health Organization, Bangladesh is one of the 30 countries with the highest number of patients in the world. Bangladesh is working earnestly to save the lives of 1.2 million people through cleaning. Bangladesh is collaborating with the Stop TB Partnership, and other partners to achieve this goal. In the event inform people that the government is developing a five-year (2021–2025) national action plan to stop TB.

Eight countries account for two-thirds of the total number of patients in the world. These countries are Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, China, Philippines, Pakistan and Nigeria.

Chief Health Officer, Br. Gen. Imrul Quais said that the government is working relentlessly to reduce TB, which is contributing significantly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He said the government believes that AIDS, TB and Malaria can be cured and prevented. It requires commitment, determination and solidarity. Let us all pledge to eradicate it". Awareness should be raised in the regulation. 
Superstitions should be removed from society so that people do not stop seeking treatment due to fear of isolation. At this time, the most important thing is to spread the issue of free treatment and diagnosis to a large number of people through networking activities at all levels of the country. 

He thanked Nari Maitree for working to create awareness among the people of slum areas of Dhaka. Shaheen Akhter Dolly, Executive Director of Nari Maitree said, we are all committed to how to stop TB from Bangladesh by 2030. We are hopeful that by working together with the support of the government, we will be able to eradicate it from Bangladesh very soon.

Incidentally: Since 2021 Non-governmental development organization Nari Maitree in collaboration with the National TB Control Program and funded by Stop TB Partnership (UNOPS) started a TB program at community-level in the slum areas of Mohammadpur, Mohakhali, Moghbazar, Gandaria, Dholpur, Mirhazirbag, Juraien, Jatrabari and Nondipara area of Dhaka city through Suspect Patient Identification, Referral and DOTS activities.
