A candidate will now be allowed to sit for the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination a maximum of three times, according to a decision made by the advisory council.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus at the chief adviser’s office in Tejgaon on Thursday.

The meeting also approved the draft ordinance titled "Maximum Age Limit for Direct Recruitment to Government Jobs, 2024," which set the maximum age limit for entering government service at 32 years.

Following the meeting, the press wing of the chief adviser’s office and the Cabinet Division briefed reporters on the key decisions.

As part of this new ordinance, the Ministry of Public Administration will revise the “BCS (Age, Qualification and Examination for Direct Recruitment) Rules, 2014” to include the new three-attempt limit for the BCS examination.

The advisory council has also decided that the maximum age for joining all cadres of the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) will be 32 years.

The same age limit will apply to all government jobs outside the BCS framework.

For autonomous and semi-autonomous organizations, this age limit will be subject to amendments in their respective recruitment rules.

However, recruitment rules for the defence and law enforcement forces will remain unchanged.

Previously, a government review committee had recommended raising the maximum age limit to 35 years for men and 37 years for women for entry into government service, though they did not make any recommendations on the retirement age.

On September 30, the government formed a committee, headed by former secretary Abdul Mueed Chowdhury of the Public Administration Reform Commission, to review the demand for increasing the age limit for entry into employment.

Currently, the general age limit for entering government service is 30 years, with an exception for children of freedom fighters, for whom the limit is 32 years.

Job seekers have long been advocating for the age limit to be raised to 35 years.
