The fate of President Shahabuddin, whether he will remain in office or step down, will be determined after discussions with various political parties.

The decision was made at an Advisory Council meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Thursday.

Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan told Prothom Alo that the government has begun consulting with political parties on the president’s potential resignation.

"A decision will be made based on the consensus reached during these discussions," she added.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expressed opposition to President Shahabuddin's removal, citing concerns over a potential constitutional crisis.

"A vacancy in the president’s post will create a constitutional and state crisis and delay the elections. Therefore, the BNP does not want the resignation of the president," BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said after a key meeting with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday.

Tensions escalated in front of Bangabhaban on Tuesday as protesters, demanding the president’s resignation within 24 hours, clashed with law enforcement.

The unrest followed President Shahabuddin’s controversial statement regarding the documentation of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation letter.

At least five people were injured when law enforcement officers fired pellet bullets and sound grenades at protesters attempting to break through barricades outside the president's residence.

Earlier in the day, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement issued a five-point demand, including a call for President Shahabuddin’s resignation within the week.
