Newly-appointed DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali today assured that autorickshaw-van drivers will not face any incidents of extortion.

Speaking at a meeting with auto-rickshaw, auto-van and easybike drivers at the DMP Headquarters, he said, "No one will be able to take away the hard-earned money of the poor. We won't spare any police official if his involvement is found with extortion."

During the meeting, the commissioner also asked the rickshaw-van drivers to form committees with OCs of police stations to look into matters of extortion.

He also said the officer-in-charges of Dhaka's police stations will be suspended within minutes if they are found to be negligent in accepting cases.

"The OCs have to accept cases if they are legitimate. Otherwise, they will be suspended in one minute," the commissioner said. The comments came after a rickshaw-puller at the meeting alleged that he was beaten up in the Kamrangichar area yesterday.

After asking why he had not filed a case, Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali said, "The OCs have to accept cases if they are legitimate. Otherwise, they will be suspended in one minute."

Earlier today, two organisations of rickshaw-van drivers sat in a meeting with the DMP commissioner, where they raised various demands.

At the meeting, auto-rickshaw drivers said they had to drive on the main road due to financial needs.
