The High Court has asked the government to present before it the steps it plans to take on the "International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) issue" within tomorrow (28 November).A lawyer filed a petition with the HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub today seeking a ban on Iskcon's activities. The lawyer filed the petition while presenting a newspaper article which documented the recent unrest that ensued surrounding the arrest of former Iskcon Bangladesh leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari.

In view of this petition, the court summoned the attorney general to the court to inquire about the opinion of the state. The attorney general said at court today that like people all over the country, his heart is also bleeding. However, the court should not take any decision on the matter right now, as the government has already started taking action in this regard, he added.

Earlier, on Tuesday (26 November) at around 11am, when former ISKCON Bangladesh leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was produced before the court of Chattogram 6th Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam, his lawyers applied for bail. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail and ordered him to be sent to jail.

A large group of people believed to be supporters of former ISKCON Bangladesh leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari blocked the prison van carrying him to jail for about two and a half hours. Later, the police dispersed the protesters by throwing sound grenades and took Chinmoy to jail.

Severely injured during the protest, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was rescued from the alley of Rangam Cinema Hall opposite the main entrance to the court and taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
