The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has stayed a High Court verdict that had declared 15 August as a general holiday commemorating National Mourning Day. The Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed pronounced the verdict today, confirmed Additional Attorney General Aneek R Haque.
Earlier, the interim government had cancelled this year's general holiday on 15 August. The cancellation was approved at a meeting of the advisory council presided over by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on 13 August.
The Awami League government had been observing 15 August, the day on which Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were killed in 1975, as the National Mourning Day.
The day was being observed as a category A national holiday.
