The Election Commission will begin updating the voter list through a door-to-door campaign starting on 20 January 2025, according to an EC official. "The training programme for officials involved in this update will be completed by 5 January," said the official who spoke to The Business Standard on condition of anonymity.
However, no official confirmation has been made regarding the 20 January start date. EC Additional Secretary KM Ali Newaz said, "We aim to begin the programme in the second half of January 2025."
He said preparations are already underway, and the training for trainers will be completed by 5 January. These trainers will then train field personnel to gather information. Ali Newaz said the draft voter list will be published on 2 January 2025 and made available for public review.
"During this period, citizens can raise claims or objections if their names are missing or if there are errors. After resolving these, the final voter list will be published on 2 March 2025. This will mark the 24th update of the voter list," he added.
The additional secretary also said information will be collected for those turning 18 by 1 January 2026, ensuring their inclusion in the 2026 voter list. However, they will not be eligible to vote in any election held in 2025. He urged all citizens to cooperate with the voter registration process.
