A large group of dismissed trainee sub-inspectors (SIs) of Bangladesh Police are demonstrating in front of the Bangladesh Secretariat, demanding reinstatement of their jobs. They began their protest at 10am today (5 January) in front of Gate 4 of the secretariat, according to media reports.

Between October and November, more than 310 trainees from the 40th (cadet) SI batch of 2023 were dismissed by the authorities for breaching discipline during their training just one month before their graduation. At the protest today, the dismissed SIs claimed they were terminated over baseless and unjustified allegations.

Arguing that their dismissals were unwarranted, the protesters urged higher authorities to reassess their cases by ensuring transparency and demanded prompt reinstatement to their positions.

Previously, before they were dismissed, the Bangladesh Police Academy in Rajshahi's Sarda had issued show-cause notices to the accused SIs in three phases over allegations of misconduct both in the field and during classes. The 40th batch had a total of 823 SIs, who had started their basic training when the show-causes and dismissals occurred.

According to regulations, their training was supposed to conclude on 4 November last year, and they were scheduled to join various police units.
