A shipment of 22,000 metric tonnes of rice from Myanmar has arrived at Chattogram Port. The MV Golden Star vessel carrying the bagged rice reached the port's limits from Yangon Port, Myanmar, at 10:12pm yesterday (16 January). It was moored at Jetty No 9 of the GCB at Chattogram Port this morning (17 January).
Md Ali Akbar, CEO of Seven Sea's Shipping Lines, said this marks the first shipment of rice under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement. The agreement between the Directorate General of Food and the Myanmar Rice Federation will see a total of 105,000 metric tonnes of rice supplied to Bangladesh.
According to the shipping line, the rice will be delivered in phases via ten small and large vessels. The entire quantity is scheduled to arrive between mid-January and mid-March. In addition to the Myanmar shipment, the government has also procured 200,000 tonnes of rice from India through an open tender.
Two consignments from India have already arrived at Chattogram Port. Once unloaded, the rice was transported to various locations, including Dewanhat and Sylhet in Chattogram, Tejgaon in Dhaka, Narayanganj, and other areas, using trucks operated by the Directorate General of Food's transport contractors.
