The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will soon be equipped with sound grenades and tear gas, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said. He came up with the announcement while briefing reporters after a meeting of the advisory council at his ministry at the Secretariat on Monday.
Replying to a query why the BGB didn't use the sound grenades and teargas shells along Chapainawabganj border during clash with Indian locals on January 18, the Home Adviser said the BGB wasn't equipped with these at that moment as the battalion has been equipped with only lethal weapons.
"Now we've given them approval, we're going to buy these things for them. They have lethal weapons. But things like sound grenades and teargas that they don't have will be purchased for them. India's Border Security Force (BSF) has these, but BGB does not," he said.
He also said the border situation is currently stable and there are no significant issues.
