Police used water cannons and charged batons to disperse a procession of independent Ebtedai madrasa teachers at Shahbagh today (26 January) as they marched towards the Chief Adviser's Office demanding nationalisation of all registered institutions.
"We stopped them at Shahbagh intersection and dispersed them. They are now in front of Dhaka University's Fine Arts Faculty," Shahbagh Police Station OC Khalid Monsur told.
Protesters claimed several colleagues were injured, with at least five seeking treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Additional Deputy Commissioner Ramna zone Mir Asaduzzaman told, "They [the teachers] promised us they would not go further than the Shahbagh area. Storming the barricades, they started marching towards the Chief Advisor residence, which led to us using water cannons."
When asked about charging batons on teachers Ramna ADC claimed he does not know of this. "I don't know any news of charging batons on teachers," he added.
