Authorities concerned have decided to end the affiliation between Dhaka University (DU) and the seven government colleges.
New students of these seven colleges will not be admitted in the 2024-25 session under DU. Existing students, however, will continue their studies under DU administration, according to a press release issued by the Public Relations Office of DU today (27 January).
The decisions were made during today's meeting between the DU VC Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan and principals of the seven colleges. During the meeting, a recommendation was made to manage the activities of the academic years starting from 2024-2025 through a special committee formed by the Ministry of Education on 29 December 29 2024.
The release said the special committee formed by the ministry will decide on the number of seats, admission fees, and other relevant issues starting from the academic year 2024-2025, as per the demands of the students.
It also said the DU administration will be responsible for ensuring that students currently enrolled in the university's academic programmes are not adversely affected in any way.
The meeting between Dhaka University (DU) authorities and principals of seven affiliated colleges started at around 12:30pm today.
In a press release issued earlier today, the VC expressed grief over the clash between students of seven colleges affiliated with DU and the latter and urged the students to keep patience and maintain peace and harmony.
"The country is going through a crisis. In such a situation, all of us need to be united. We need to be vigilant to thwart third parties from taking advantage," the VC said.
Meanwhile, the DU authorities suspended all exams at the university and the seven colleges affiliated to it for today. The date and time for the postponed exams will be announced later, according to an earlier press release issued by DU's Public Relations Office.
Earlier last night (26 January), the Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB), along with police assistance, were deployed as students of the seven government colleges and Dhaka University locked in sporadic clashes at the Nilkhet intersection.
Four platoons of the BGB were deployed to maintain order as students of both seven colleges and Dhaka University were positioned there at around midnight, BGB PRO Shariful Islam confirmed.
Police reportedly lobbed sound grenades to disperse the crowd. After intervention from the security forces, the situation started to normalise as tensions died down between the two groups at around 1:30am.
