Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) students today (9 February) staged a sit-in in Shahbagh following an earlier announcement of a long march programme to press home their four-point demand.
"Students of MATS blocked the Shahbagh-TSC road, leading to traffic congestion surrounding the area. Vehicular movement is slow at the intersection," said Mehedi Shakil, assistant commissioner (traffic) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)'s Shahbagh zone. Around 11am, hundreds of students carrying banners were seen marching to Shahbagh.
The students called for the immediate filling of vacant positions at the 10th-grade level in government jobs, paving paths for new jobs in both public and private sectors, an overhaul of the course curriculum, renaming their institution to a medical institute, and the establishment of an independent Medical Education Board of Bangladesh.
The MATS students have been protesting for the past couple of weeks over the same demands.
