Adviser Mahfuj Alam has been given charge of the information and broadcasting ministry, a day after Nahid Islam resigned from the post to join an upcoming youth-led political party. Besides, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has taken responsibility of the Ministry Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, another ministry Nahid Islam used to be in charge of.
The Cabinet Division issued a circular in this regard today (26 February). Earlier yesterday, Nahid Islam resigned from the Advisory Council of the interim government as the information and broadcasting adviser.
Nahid, who also oversaw the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, handed over the resignation letter to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus after an informal meeting of the Advisory Council held at 1pm on the day.
"Given the current situation in the country, the rise of a new political force is necessary. I have resigned to remain on the streets to consolidate the mass uprising. In addition to two ministries, I had to take on additional responsibilities...Six months is a very short time, and the people will evaluate the results [of my work]," Nahid said during a briefing later.
Nahid, who came to the spotlight during the July-August uprising as a key coordinator of the movement, is set to join the upcoming party of Students Against Discrimination and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee scheduled to be launched on 28 February. He is expected to be the convener of the new party.
