A fire has broken out at the BRP slum in the capital's Bhashantek area. Five firefighting units from Mirpur and Kurmitola fire stations are currently working to control the blaze, according to Fire Service and Civil Defence officials.The fire was first reported at around 11am today (6 March), said Fire Service officers.
At around 11:30am, Fire Service spokesperson Talha Bin Zasim told reporters that the fire was still burning and that firefighters were actively working to douse the flames. Details regarding how the fire started or the extent of damage are yet to be known.
No casualties have been reported so far. Quoting one of the slum dwellers, bdnews24.com reported that the fire first started at one shanti in the slum and then spread quickly. Residents had nearly managed to douse the flames but the situation worsened after a gas cylinder exploded, reigniting the fire in a larger area. Police and army personnel are at the scene to help the firefighters and keep the situation around the slum under control.
