Garment workers in Gazipur have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway protesting the death of a female worker in a recent road accident. The blockade, which began at 8am, has halted traffic on the highway, causing significant disruption for commuters and vehicles. The deceased worker has been identified as Jannatul Ferdous Tamanna, 32, an employee of Golden Refit Garments Ltd.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Gazipur Industrial Police-2, AKM Zahidul Islam, stated that law enforcement, including industrial police, district police, and highway police, had arrived at the scene. Efforts are being made to negotiate with the protesters and clear the road to restore normal traffic flow, he added.

According to police and worker sources, the incident occurred at around 7am today (12 March). Tamanna was on her way to work when she was fatally struck by a truck near the factory in the Bagher Bazar area of Gazipur Sadar Upazila. Following her death, fellow garment workers took to the streets at around 8am, blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

Protesting workers alleged that Tamanna had requested leave from APM Matiur Rahman, a factory official, the previous night at around 9pm due to her child's illness. However, her leave request was denied, and her factory-issued ID was confiscated before she was sent home. The next morning, while returning to work, she was tragically killed in the accident. Enraged by the incident, workers staged the blockade demanding justice.
