Saimon Group has been providing various travel-related services in Bangladesh for 42 years. Founded by the father, the daughter currently leads the company as Managing Director. In an interview with Anjan Chandra Deb of The Daily Messenger, Afsia Jannat Saleh, also the Vice President of the Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB), shared her insights on the present and future of tourism, along with the challenges the sector faces in Bangladesh.

The Daily Messenger: How is the current state of tourism?

Afsia Jannat Saleh: Tourism business in Bangladesh has improved significantly compared to the year of 2020-21. The growth mirrors the experience of 2019, despite occasional downturns. Although there is an increased desire for international travel, the number of tourists visiting our country remains low due to inadequate infrastructure.

Messenger: What are the obstacles in the expansion of the tourism business in Bangladesh?

Afsia: There are several obstacles to the expansion of the tourism business. The government addressed this by preparing a tourism master plan two months ago to meet the 2040 targets. Sightseeing is not adequately highlighted, and essential facilities for tourists, such as proper washrooms, are lacking. Foreign tourists often avoid visiting places in Bangladesh due to safety and security concerns. Resolving these issues is crucial to attracting foreign tourists.

Messenger: Can the tourism sector play a role in the development of the economy of Bangladesh?

Afsia: Only 3 percent of our total GDP comes from the tourism sector. While tourism plays a significant role in the economy of many countries, it is not as impactful in Bangladesh due to a lack of global recognition. Properly highlighting our country's tourist spots could significantly contribute to paving the way for economic development.

Messenger: What role does your organization play in the development of the tourism sector?

Afsia: The Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB) collaborates with the government for the development of the tourism sector. We maintain close relationships with foreign countries and work on various aspects of the tourism sector.

Messenger: Would you share Saimon Group's future plans?

Afsia: We provide various tourism services, and in the future, we aim to make all services available online for our customers. We are committed to playing a more significant role in the development of this sector.
