The price of onion has started to double up following India’s recent decision to ban export of onion until march of next year on Friday (8 December).
On Saturday (9 December) morning, local onions were being sold at Tk220 in different places of the capital. This price was Tk140 just a day ago.
Meanwhile, imported or Indian onions were Tk120-140 on Friday (8 December). Now on Saturday morning these onions were being sold at Tk200.
A vendor at Dhaka’s New Eskaton Road area when asked about the price hike said, "Usually, every day, I buy one or two sacks of onions from the wholesale market. However, because of the skyrocketing prices today, I could only obtain 15 kg. As a result, I have to charge Tk200 for Indian imports and Tk220 for local onions.
"Just yesterday, I sold the same onions for approximately Tk140," he added.
