Biman Bangladesh Airlines is actively advancing its strategic initiatives, encompassing a range of plans for expansion. Among these plans are the introduction of new flight routes in emerging and lucrative markets, the expansion of the fleet, and address and overcome the image crisis in ground handling. The current board of directors is dedicated to the ambitious goal of positioning Bangladesh Biman among the top 10 airlines in Asia in terms of service quality.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines, under the leadership of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Shafiul Azim, has articulated its commitment to transforming into a 'Smart Airlines.' This strategic vision aligns with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's overarching vision for a 'Smart Bangladesh.'
Shafiul Azim emphasised Biman Bangladesh Airlines' commitment to becoming a smart airline in line with the evolving concept of Smart Bangladesh. The airline has set forth a strategic plan aimed at not only achieving a position among Asia's top 10 airlines but also aspiring to gradually ascend to the ranks of Asia's top 3 airlines.
He has confirmed the initiation of action plans to optimise the utilisation of new-generation aircraft. These plans encompass route expansion and the development of skilled human resources at all levels, with a specific focus on pilots.
“The primary aim of this program is to establish good governance, accountability, and transparency throughout all levels of the organisation, from the highest echelons to the lowest. Those who excel in their responsibilities will be duly rewarded, while those engaging in misconduct will face appropriate consequences,” Shafiul Azim said.
Biman will exclusively deploy its own aircraft for this year's Hajj flights, opting not to lease any additional aircraft for the purpose. Furthermore, Biman Bangladesh Airlines is currently executing 'C' checks, a meticulous examination of individual aircraft systems, successfully saving USD 2 million with each check.
The recent successful completion of 'C' checks on five Boeing 787-8 and 9 Dreamliners at the Biman hangar at Dhaka Airport resulted in a total savings of Tk 20 crore. Additionally, plans are underway to launch an online feedback service for passengers, and all necessary measures will be implemented to optimise and address any issues related to the flight schedule, he added.
The official stated, "Initiatives are in progress to enhance the passenger-friendliness of the airline and facilitate digital services. We have implemented an action plan to augment the capacity of our 24-hour call center, ensuring swift reception of passenger complaints."
Furthermore, the top Biman official reported that Biman achieved a profit of Tk 436 crore in the financial year 2021-22. Notably, the airline surpassed its target by achieving a load capacity of 77 percent, carrying 2.8 million passengers—exceeding the set target of 74 percent from the previous year.
The existing fleet comprises 21 aircraft, including 18 owned by Biman, serving across 20 international routes.
In an effort to enhance Biman's quality of service, the airline is executing plans to introduce additional routes. Notably, the Narita route in Japan and the Chennai route in India have already been inaugurated. Discussions are underway for the potential launch of the New York route in the future. As part of this expansion strategy, the acquisition of 10 more aircraft is being considered, and preparations have commenced to facilitate this process.
In response to frequent passenger complaints regarding delays and mishandling of luggage, a comprehensive plan has been put in place to address these concerns. Ground handling staff are now actively working to improve the proper and timely reception of passengers' luggage. Additionally, the implementation of body-worn cameras for all ground handling personnel is underway. This measure ensures that the actions of workers are closely monitored by the cameras, effectively eliminating any potential for work slowdowns and baggage mishandling complaints.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines officials have reported a notable improvement in the quality of in-flight services. The recent addition of the latest Dreamliner Boeing 787 to the fleet has contributed to this enhancement. Passengers now have access to WiFi facilities even at 45,000 feet, providing connectivity throughout the flight. Furthermore, all these flights are equipped with entertainment facilities, enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers.
Shahjalal International Airport is making significant strides toward establishing itself as an aviation hub. With the imminent opening of the third terminal, the airport is poised to become a comprehensive hub where various airlines can cater to their operational needs. Skilled engineers at the current aircraft hangar are conducting technical tasks such as C Checks, eliminating the necessity to send aircraft abroad for such services. This facility is not only utilised by domestic airlines but has also become a preferred choice for foreign airlines, contributing to a notable increase in the airline's revenue.
Tahera Khatun, General Manager (Public Relations) of Bangladesh Biman, shared with The Daily Messenger that Biman initially starting its journey with a DC-3 aircraft from the Air Force provided by the government, has played a pivotal role in connecting the people of Bengal to destinations worldwide. The inaugural flights to Chittagong and Sylhet on March 7, 1972, and a subsequent flight to Jashore on March 9 marked the commencement of this remarkable journey.
This marked the inception of Biman's internal operations, and since then, there has been no turning back. While profitability is a significant aspect of aviation, it is not the sole consideration. In certain cases, the operation of flights on multiple international routes is deemed necessary even in the face of losses, prioritising the interests of the state. Biman's revenue has been consistently on the rise each year, reflecting its sustained growth and contribution to the aviation sector, she added.
