The government of Japan will provide an amount of 2,294 million Japanese Yen (equivalent to approximately Tk 172.3162 crore or $15.31 million) for a fisheries project.
The project titled “Project for the improvement of fish landing centre of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation in Cox’s Bazar district” will be implemented by Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
In this regard, a grant agreement and exchange of notes were signed between Bangladesh and Japan on Thursday.
Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, secretary of the Economic Relations Division (ERD), signed the exchange of notes and grant agreement on behalf of Bangladesh. IWAMA Kiminori, the ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, signed the exchange of notes while ICHIGUCHI Tomohide, chief representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s Bangladesh office, signed the grant agreement on behalf of Japan, according to an ERD press release.
The grant provided by Japan will be utilised to improve the efficiency of landing and handling of netted fish. Moreover, the productivity of the fish will be enhanced and the distribution system will be improved by upgrading the infrastructure and fishing equipment of BFDC’s fish landing centre in Cox’s Bazar.
The press release said Japan is the single largest bilateral development partner of Bangladesh. Since independence, Japan has committed $32.36 billion. The East Asian country has contributed significantly to the overall development of the country.
In addition to soft loans, Japan is also providing a significant amount of grant and technical assistance for different projects, including support for human resource development, socio-economic development, and environmental protection.
