The first consignment of onions from India arrived in Bangladesh on Sunday (31 March) through the Darshana land port in Chuadanga district.
Mirza Quamrur Hasan, manager of Darshana International land port, said Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) imported 1650 metric tonnes (MT) of onions on 42 wagons as the consignment reached the port around 5:30 pm.
The loaded wagons will be unloaded at night and taken to Sirajganj bazar and later it will be sent to different divisions and districts.
Darshana municipality mayor and general secretary of Darshana C&F Agent Association, Atier Rahman Habu, said the government has taken the decision to import onion to keep the onion market stable during the month of Ramadan.
