The government on Wednesday approved separate proposals for procuring three cargos of liquefied natural gas (LNG) 1.6 crore litres of edible oil, 30,000 tonnes of fertilisers, and 10,000 tonnes of lentil to meet the growing demand in the country.
The approval was given at this year’s 8th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase held in the Cabinet Division conference room at Bangladesh Secretariat.
Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali chaired the meeting.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary (coordination and reforms) Mahmudul Hossain Khan said the meeting had approved a total of 12 proposals.
He said in response to three proposals from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, the government would procure one cargo of LNG from M/S Vitol Asia Pte Ltd Singapore at a cost of around Tk 418.59 crore with per MMBtu LNG costing $9.23, one cargo from M/S Total Energies Gas and Power Ltd Switzerland at a cost of around Tk 427.67 crore with per MMBtu LNG costing $9.23, and another cargo from M/S Gunvor Singapore Pte Ltd Singapore for Tk 410.65 crore with per MMBtu LNG costing $9.23.
In response to a proposal from the Ministry of Commerce, the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh would procure 10,000 tonnes of lentil under the local open tender method (OTM) from Sena Kalyan Sangstha and Nabil Naba Foods at a cost of around Tk 102.75 crore. Per kg lentil would cost Tk 102.75.
The TCB would also purchase 1.1 crore litres of soybean oil under the local OTM from City Edible Oil at a cost of around Tk 168.27 crore. Per litre soybean oil would cost Tk 152.98.
Besides, The TCB would purchase 50,000 litres of rice bran oil under the local OTM from Majumder Bran Oil Mills and Majumder Products at a cost of around Tk 76 crore, with per litre oil costing Tk 152.
Responding to a proposal from the Ministry of Industries, the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation would procure 30,000 tonnes of bagged granular urea fertiliser under the 15th lot from KAFCO Bangladesh at a cost of around Tk 120.9 crore. Per tonne fertiliser would cost $366.37.
Moreover, in response to a proposal from the Ministry of Railways, Bangladesh Railway would procure 200 broad gauge passenger carriages from India’s RITES Limited at a cost of around Tk 1,626.49 crore.
The meeting also approved one proposal each from the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, and the Ministry of Shipping.
