Travellers leaving Dhaka for Eid journeys have to pay additional fares of Tk 983.94 crore despite various efforts of government agencies to stop transport operators from charging extra fares.
Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS) said in a media statement on Sunday (7 April) after monitoring the overall situation of charging additional fares and passenger services ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
According to BJKS, transport operators are charging passengers extra fares due to the hikes in commodity prices, the increase in extortion, and the intention to make extra profits, among other reasons.
The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways in a recent statement said around 15 million passengers would exit the greater Dhaka area for Eid celebrations.
