The benchmark index, DSEX, of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) increased by 44 points, reaching 5,161 on Wednesday, the first day of trading after the Eid-ul-Azha vacation.

However, the DSE turnover fell by 41.76 per cent to Tk 246.14 crore, which was a 16-month low, as there were fewer market participants following the Eid holidays. The last time there was a lower volume than this was on February 26 last year, when the trading volume was Tk 231 crore.

In the previous session, the key index of the DSE gained 35 points. The blue-chip index DS30 rose by 22 points to 1,844, and the DSES rose by 13 points to 1,121. Among the traded scrips, 232 advanced, 96 declined, and 64 remained unchanged.

The DSE major indices opened higher and maintained the gaining streak on Wednesday. Trading was closed for five days for weekly holidays and the Eid-ul-Azha vacation. The last day of trading was Thursday in the previous week.

Crystal Insurance Company, Pragati Life Insurance, and Fortune Shoes Limited were the most traded shares on the Dhaka Stock Exchange. The top 10 gainers considering the closing price on Wednesday were Style Craft, Central Insurance, Golden Jubilee Mutual Fund, Capitec Grameen Bank Growth Fund, Walton Hi-Tech Industries, Mercantile Islami Insurance, AIBL 1st Islamic Mutual Fund, Far East Knitting & Dyeing, Prime insurance and Monno Agro & General Machinery Limited.

Market analysts said after a sharp correction in recent weeks, many good stocks fell to a lucrative price level, which encouraged a section of investors to put in fresh steak. Moreover, prevailing rumours on the probable withdrawal of the proposed imposition of capital gain tax instil some confidence among jittery investors. The participation of investors remained thin on the trading floor as most of the investors are yet to return to Dhaka after celebrating Eid festival in their village homes.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended higher, with its All Share Price Index (CASPI) gaining 61.23 points to settle at 14608 and the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) losing 38.26 points to settle at 8786. The port city bourse traded 7.9 lakh shares and mutual fund units with a turnover value of Tk 68.78 million. At the CSE, 145 issues were traded. Of those, 53 closed higher and 71 closed lower.
