In the last week of July, the country's stock market experienced a mixed performance with three days of gains and two days of declines. The unrest over student quota reforms in government jobs significantly impacted the market, leading to a decrease in share prices for most companies. This has resulted in a reduction of investor market capital by Tk 4,382.5 crore.
According to Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) data, the market saw a decline in share prices for three consecutive days—Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. Despite this, there was a recovery over the final two days of the week, with the index showing an increase. By the end of the week, the share and unit prices of 49 companies had risen, while 327 companies saw a drop in prices, and 16 companies' prices remained unchanged.
Last week, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) saw a decline across its main indices. The DSE General Index fell by 79.71 points to 5,333 points, while the DS-30 Index decreased by 31 points and the DSES Index dropped by 17 points. This led to a reduction in the market capital of DSE, which fell to Tk 6,53,368 crore from Tk 6,57,750 crore the previous week. This represents a decrease of Tk 4,382 crore in investor market capitalization over the past week.
In addition to the drop in indices, trading activity also declined. The average daily transaction on the DSE was Tk 478.92 crore, down from Tk 555.11 crore the previous week. This signifies a reduction of Tk 76.19 crore, or 13.73 percent, in average daily trading volume.
During the past week on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), Techno Drugs led in trading volume, with shares traded at an average of Tk 32.44 crore per day, accounting for 6.78per cent of the total trade. Agni Systems followed with an average daily trading volume of Tk 24.36 crore. Orion Infusion ranked third, with shares traded at an average of Tk 16.87 crore per day.
The top ten traded companies also included Alif Industries, NRB Bank, Lavello Ice Cream, Sea Pearl Beach Resort, Square Pharmaceuticals, Unilever Consumer Care, and Forest Knitting.
On the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), market capitalization decreased by Tk 5,548.93 crore over the week. The capitalization at the beginning of the week was Tk 6,92,387 crore, but it fell to Tk 6,86,838 crore by the end of the week. Of the companies traded on the CSE, 47 saw an increase in share prices, while 230 experienced a decline.
Last week, the total trading volume on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) was Tk 396 crore. This marks a significant decrease compared to the previous week, when Tk 606 crore 11 lakh was traded. This represents a drop of Tk 210 crore 11 lakh, or approximately 34.6 per cent in trading volume.
