The World Ovarian Cancer Coalition has re-elected Rafe Sadnan Adel, a former journalist turned communications professional, to its Board of Directors for a second term. Adel begins his three-year tenure with the global coalition on December 11, 2024, according to a press release on Wednesday.
In 2014, Rafe launched the first-ever cancer-related Bangla website, www.cancerbd.net (formerly cancerbd.com), to provide cancer awareness information to Bengali-speaking communities. The site addresses a critical need by covering various cancer types, symptoms, diagnoses, and information on treatment centres, doctors, and medicines.
Cancerbd.net also organises seminars, symposiums, webinars, and media and social campaigns focused on cancer awareness. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the platform distributed food assistance multiple times to individuals affected by cancer.
Robin Cohen, the newly elected Chair of the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition, welcomed Adel's re-election. She said, "As Chair, I am delighted to welcome Rafe Sadnan Adel once again to the Board of Directors. His significant skill and expertise as a communicator and patient advocate will be a huge asset."
Clara MacKay, CEO of the Coalition, praised Adel's contributions. She said, "Adel's passion for patient advocacy, driven by the loss of his mother to ovarian cancer, combined with his exceptional communication credentials, makes him an excellent addition to the Coalition. We look forward to working with him to change the future of ovarian cancer for all women."
Reacting to his re-election, Rafe Sadnan Adel, Founder and Chairperson of Cancerbd.net, expressed his commitment. He said, "I am particularly keen to ensure that the needs of women from Asian countries are met. By working together in a coordinated and planned way, I believe the day will come when no woman in the world will die from ovarian cancer. That day is not far. Let's know about cancer; let's live in peace."
The current Board of the Coalition includes Chair Robin Cohen, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the US-based Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation; Vice-Chair Elisabeth Baugh, former CEO of Ovarian Cancer Canada; Jane Hill, former CEO of Ovarian Cancer Australia; Tammy Brown, a Partner in KPMG Canada's audit practice in the Greater Toronto Area; Runcie C.W. Chidebe, Executive Director of Nigeria's Project PINK BLUE cancer awareness organisation; Dave Power, and Julie Torode.
